PART 4 - LHQ Training
Proficiency Level Training Program
The proficiency level training program consists of 5 levels, which take 1 year to complete (2 years for level 5). The training consists of aviation subjects as well as drill, leadership, citizenship and general cadet knowledge. Upon completion of a level, a cadet will typically receive a promotion and a badge to wear on the uniform.
Beginning in level 3, cadets undergo assessment in certain subjects. These assessments serve to confirm that the cadet understands the knowledge of the subject. Should they be unsuccessful in the assessment, the cadet will be given as many opportunities as necessary to complete the assessment, however, promotion will be delayed.
In the case of leadership assessments, a cadet can complete it and pass their level, however, if they complete the assessment with difficulty, their promotion will be delayed and additional opportunities will be given for the cadet to achieve a higher grade.

Leadership Appointments
Beginning in level 4, cadets will have the opportunity to take on a leadership appointment where they become responsible for a group of cadets over a long term. Subsequent, more senior appointments may become available which cadets can compete for. Competitions may include an interview process and/or assessment of knowledge such as drill.
Cadets are required to take on a leadership appointment in order to be promoted to FSgt or higher. Should a level 4 or level 5 cadet wish to take on an appointment, they can speak with their Level Training Officer.

Training Counselling Sessions
Should a cadet not qualify in a training level or if a promotion is delayed due to training performance, they will be informed in writing as to the reason. They will also be entitled to a TCS upon request to the Trg O.
Training Year
The training year runs from the beginning of September until mid-June, with a two-week break at Christmas and a one-week break that runs concurrently with school spring break. During July and August, the squadron stands down meaning that no activities are conducted and the office is closed.
Parade Night Routine
Parade nights take place every Friday night from the beginning of September until mid-June. The night begins with cadets falling into their flights. Activities between 1830 and 1905 hrs are at the discretion of the W Comd. Cadets may divide into Syndicates, Flights, Squadrons, or form up as a Wing to practice drill, work on uniforms, or conduct a march-past.
At 1905 hrs, cadets break off into training levels and go through three 30 minute periods of instruction. There is a 15 minute break after the first period, where cadets can purchase snacks and drinks from the canteen.
The night ends with closing parade and announcements. Parents are encouraged to attend closing parade to observe the cadets and listen to announcements as well.
The exact parade night timings are as follows:
1800 hrs - Office opens
1815 hrs - Senior cadets fall ins
1830 hrs - Fall-in; activities at W Comd's discretion
1900 hrs - Classroom setup
1905 hrs - First period
1935 hrs - Break
1950 hrs - Second period
2020 hrs - Break
2025 hrs - Third period
2055 hrs - Classroom tear-down
2100 hrs - Fall-in and senior cadet announcements
2110 hrs - Closing parade
2130 hrs - Dismissal (Cadets must depart NLT 2200 hrs)
2130 hrs - Senior cadets may conduct a meeting at this time
PARENTS, PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CADET IS PICKED UP NLT 2200 HRS ON PARADE NIGHTS, OR NLT ½ HOUR AFTER THE SCHEDULED END TO ANY OTHER ACTIVITY.

Mandatory vs Optional
Cadets must attend all mandatory activities as they count towards achieving a training level. These include regular parade nights, field training exercises. In addition to our training activities, our tag day fundraisers are also mandatory.
It is understood that from time to time, cadets may have commitments outside of the squadron that may interfere with mandatory activities (e.g. sports, school). However, be aware that excessive absences (including excused) may inhibit a cadet from achieving their training level which can affect promotions and other opportunities.
Optional activities are just that: optional. They include fam flying, band and drill team. These activities typically take place on weekends. Attendance does not count towards achieving a training level; however, attendance is these activities may be a factor when deciding promotions, parade positions, and summer training opportunities. Cadets are encouraged to attend all activities that are open to them.

Optional Activities
In addition to our mandatory training conducted on Friday nights, we conduct several other optional activities throughout the training year.
The band is one of the strongest traditions at 170 RCACS. It provides the traditional music for Friday night parades, as well as ceremonial parades, such as the Annual Ceremonial Review. They are always looking for new members and no experience is required! Rehearsals are every Sunday from 1400-1700 hrs at Building 21 where cadets practice instrument technique, music theory, ensemble practice, and of course marching and drill. Cadets who are interested in joining, feel free to contact the Band Officer for more information.
We also run marksmanship and biathlon programs throughout the training year which includes opportunities to travel for competitions.
We may from time-to-time organize trips away from home. We may decide to spend a few days visiting a squadron in another city, or go skiing for a weekend. These activities rely heavily on fundraising, so cadets are encouraged to do as much as they can in order to make these opportunities happen.

Annual Ceremonial Review
The Annual Ceremonial Review is typically our final parade of the training year, and is an opportunity for cadets to show off their drill, dress, and deportment in front of their family.
The event consists of an inspection by a reviewing officer (either a senior officer invited from another unit or a VIP in the community), a march past and displays by various teams. We also present our most prestigious awards on that day.

Familiarization Flying Program
Throughout the training year, the squadron conducts familiarization flying out of St Andrews Airport using rented Cessna 172 aircraft. Cadets are taken, two or three at a time, for a 30-40 minute flight over the City of Winnipeg. The activity dates vary depending on staff availability.
When we determine that the activity will take place, an announcement will be made a few days to a week prior. All cadets of the squadron are eligible to sign up.
Cancellation may occur due to unforeseen circumstances such as weather, equipment issues, or staff availability.

Field Training Exercises
All cadets in levels 1 through 5 are required to participate in a field training exercise (FTX) as part of their level training.
The squadron provides transportation, food, tents, sleeping bags and air mattresses, so cadets are only required to bring clothing and toiletries.
Cadets learn many skills such as shelter building, ground to air signals and navigation by compass and GPS. The exercises typically run from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon. Consult the squadron Google calendar for specific dates.

Cadets with Food Allergies
It is important for the cadets and parents to be aware that the CAF does not have the mandate, is not equipped nor staffed to offer allergen-free foods or food preparation conditions. These limitations apply to meals and snacks prepared just as much by the CAF as by a caterer, civilian volunteers or parents, and for all types of programs, courses and activities conducted throughout the year, whether locally or away. The CAF is concerned that for those cadets with food allergies, sensitivities or intolerance it may not always be safe to participate in all cadet training and activities.
Upon enrollment, parents of an applicant with food allergies are required to indicate if they consent or not to their child participating in programs, courses and activities during which meals are consumed. If consent is not given, cadets will not be able to participate under any circumstances (this will NOT count against their attendance though). If consent is given, cadets may be able to participate in an activity; however, there may still be limitations.
In the case of FTXs, the staff will consult with parents to determine the impact of the cadet's allergy. If unable to eat the MREs, the solution could be that the cadet or parent supplies the meals, and/or the cadet participates on the Saturday only (when most of the training occurs).

Instructor Responsibilities
As a condition of being a member with 170 Squadron, either as a senior cadet or as adult staff, all personnel may be tasked with instructing a lesson. The priority of instructor assignment will be as follows:
1. CCO mandated qualified instructor (UCCMA, RSO);
2. Senior cadet with Subject Matter Expert (SME) knowledge;
3. Any other senior cadet;
4. Level training officer; and
5. Any other available staff member.
In consultation with individuals, the Trg O will assign instructors to teach each and every lesson outlined in the UTP. Cadets are added to the pool of instructors when they enter level 5. All instructors are required to read their email and visit this website a minimum of once per week in order to keep up-to-date with the latest squadron correspondence. More often is highly recommended. Cadets are also encouraged to visit our Facebook page.
When the training schedule is published, instructors are to review the schedule and make note of any classes they’re assigned to. If an instructor’s name is attached to a particular class, that instructor is then tasked to prepare for and teach that class. Failure to review the schedule does not constitute a failure of the Trg O to communicate instructor assignments. Each instructor must be aware of their responsibilities.
If an instructor cannot teach a class, they are to inform the Trg O ASAP. An absence does not necessarily absolve an instructor from preparing for a class. The instructor must endeavor to create a lesson plan and make it available for the substitute instructor. Instructors must also communicate their absence through their chain of command for attendance records.
If an instructor needs to leave early, they must advise the Trg O, prior to leaving. Senior cadets must also advise the Admin O for attendance records.
Lesson plans need to be prepared for each and every class without exception. Instructors must never assume that they will be given all the materials, supplies, and/or equipment to teach with. If the supplies aren’t already in the training support office, a request needs to be submitted to the Trg O well in advance. This includes any records that may be on file (e.g. fitness test results).

Instructor Resources
In order to prepare for and deliver lessons, instructors have many resources at their disposal, including PP&S, computers, projectors (incl a portable screen), printer, and a laminating machine. Most resources are located within the office or storage room. When done with computers, please ensure they are shut off.
There is money available for supplies that aren’t already found in the office or storage room. If there is something like to see, please ask the Trg O.
There is a WiFi network available with coverage throughout the second floor of Building 21 and on the west side of the parade square. The password is indicated on the router in Rm 203. There is also a hard drive connected to the router which can be accessed using any Squadron-owned laptop. There is a lesson plan repository on the drive where instructors can save lesson plans and other lesson information.

cadet pick-up times
It is our duty to stay on location until all cadets have departed after dismissal. Dismissal from parade nights occurs at 2130 hrs and for all other activities, the dismissal time is posted on this website and communicated through announcements. Often, with our gliding days, cadets return to B21 early and staff will do their best to communicate ahead of time through Facebook and/or email.
Considering these published dismissal times, parents must make every effort to ensure their cadet is picked up on time. The staff have other commitments outside of the squadron and failure to pick a cadet up on time can seriously impair the staff's ability to make those commitments. We will ensure a staff member is available up to 1/2 hour after dismissal, so please ensure cadets are picked up within that time.
We can also make accommodations if parents will be late, however, we need to be notified as soon as possible. This can be done by contacting our office using the methods found in the 'Contact Us' section of this website. If it is short notice, best is to call our office line.
