Squadron Sponsoring Committee

The Mission of the Sponsoring Committee is: "To Provide Sponsorship, Moral Support, Resource Support and Financial Assistance to 170 St. James Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron."

The Squadron Sponsoring Committee (SSC) is an important piece of the puzzle when it comes to the operation of the squadron. It bridges the gap between what the Department of National Defence provides and what the squadron actually needs to function in terms of money, supplies, and facilities.

Specific responsibilities of the SSC are as follows:

- Assisting in recruiting suitable persons to be Cadets in the squadron;
- Making comments through the Provincial Committee to the appropriate Commander regarding the appointment, promotion, transfer or release of Cadet Instructor Cadre (CIC) Officers for the squadron;
- Assisting in providing names of possible candidates for replacement Officers and for positions as Civilian instructors or volunteers;
- Inviting suitable persons to be members of the Squadron Sponsoring Committee;
- Liaison with other Cadet unit SSC;
- Providing appropriate accommodation for their Squadron's training, administration and stores when it is not provided by the CAF;
- Providing training aids and equipment, including band instruments, not supplied by the CAF;
- Arranging Cadet recreational programs;
- Providing transportation, when not available from the CAF, for local training exercises;
- Providing for the financial and administrative needs of the Squadron;
- Supporting Provincial Committee activities;
- Providing input to Cadets' applications for summer training;
- Providing such other facilities or assistance as may be mutually agreed between the SSC and the CAF; and
- Registering and Screening all volunteers in accordance with League policies.

The Sponsor's Partnership and Fundraising

The Air Cadet Program is run by a partnership of:

- The DND who provides/supports the adult staff. The DND also supports mandatory cadet training and provides uniforms;
- The Air Cadet League of Canada who provides/supports the flying and gliding program as well as support many other functions of the Royal Canadian Air Cadet Program; and
- The Squadron Sponsoring Committee – who provides financial support through fundraising for:

Administrative and training costs not supported by DND;
Payment of the Air Cadet League assessment fees;
Extracurricular trips and activities (i.e. Mess Dinner, Awards Banquet etc.);
Biathlon, Marksmanship and Band Equipment;
Trophies/Awards presented at the Annual Ceremonial Review/Awards Banquet;
Computer equipment; and
Familiarization Flights in a small engine aircraft.

This list does not even begin to cover EVERYTHING that the SSC does for the cadets of 170 St. James Squadron, however just for our squadron’s activities we need to raise approximately $25,000 each year!

To accomplish this the SSC holds various fundraising activities throughout the year and all cadets are expected to participate in these events. Parents are also expected to get involved and help out where needed. Parent volunteers look after the organization of fundraising events such as Tag Days, various sales and Cadet Canteen. Squadron ceremonial and social events also require the assistance and organization of Parent Volunteers. Just a few cadets and parents cannot accomplish this alone; we all need to chip in and participate in order to support the Squadron.

The SSC is an integral part of 170 Squadron and depends on many volunteers. The Committee meets every month to discuss upcoming events, fundraising ideas, and any concerns they may have with the Commanding Officer.
